The Trustees
| Carol Biely
Carol, the Foundation’s chair, moved to Salt Spring with her husband, Bob, in 1995 when she retired from her full time position as executive director of a multi-service non-profit organization. When she moved, she was still acting as a consultant in non-profit and volunteer management and sitting on several local, provincial, and national boards of directors. She is now concentrating her energies on tending her garden, hosting family and friends from around the world, and playing a leading role in the Foundation. After many years of having to search for charitable funding for the organizations she was involved with, Carol is loving being “on the granting side.” She is totally committed to the idea that the Foundation plays an important role in strengthening the island’s quality of life. Carol believes in building a dynamic, knowledgeable core of trustees and committee members to guide the Foundation in its future direction. The Foundation’s current team is an example of how people with a mix of talents, skills, knowledge, and backgrounds can work together effectively toward a common goal. |

Terry Bolton
Terry worked as a chemical engineer in the oil industry for 30 years in numerous locations both domestic and abroad. In 1991, Terry and his wife Beverley purchased their Salt Spring home, and three years later, when Terry took early retirement, moved to the island as permanent residents. Terry and Bev operated a B&B for 10 years while becoming more involved with the community. Terry has served as both a member and chair of the CRD Liquid Waste Committee, as a board member and treasurer of ArtSpring, and on the board of the Beddis area residents’ association. In 2007, he joined the Foundation as a community member on the Grants Advisory Committee and accepted a position as trustee in June of 2008. |

| Bob Brawn
Bob Brawn, a retired chartered accountant and businessman, is the Foundation’s treasurer. As treasurer, he chairs the finance committee and is also a member of the Foundation’s investment committee. Bob’s late wife’s family settled on the island in the 1920s, and Bob and his family have been connected with the island since the fifties. In 1980, Bob and his wife, Sharon, bought the family land, and in 1994, built their house and moved here on a full-time basis. In addition to his work with the Foundation, Bob has chaired the North Salt Spring Waterworks for the last 10 years. Bob feels that working with the Foundation gives him the opportunity to give something back to the island he has had such a close association with. |

| Gladys Campbell
Gladys chairs the Foundation’s grants advisory committee, which is responsible for providing advice to the board of trustees regarding potential grant recipients. As a fourth-generation islander on both sides of the family, Gladys has a long family history on Salt Spring. Although she and her husband, John, lived off-island for many years, they returned to Salt Spring when John retired. Gladys is a retired RN with over 30 years experience volunteering at community and provincial levels. She believes the SSI Foundation provides a wonderful way for people connected in any way to Salt Spring Island to leave a perpetual legacy. |

Emily Hepburn
Although Emily is by local standards a recent arrival on the island, she has a long-time connection to Salt Spring as her husband, Duncan, was island born and raised. Early retirement enabled Emily and Duncan to pursue their long-time goal of living on the family property in Fulford, where they run a Christmas Tree Farm and “putter in the garden.” During her teaching career, Emily taught in both elementary and secondary schools, was a school administrator, and after returning to university, taught special education at the high-school level. Community involvement has always been an important part of Emily’s life, and she brings a wide variety of volunteer experiences to her position as a trustee. She feels that her work with the Foundation is a way of giving back to the community now, while at the same time building a legacy for future residents.

Wendy Kaye
Wendy is an asset to the Foundation both as chair of the donor relations committee and as a member of the governance committee. She retired to Salt Spring Island in 1999 and says it felt like “coming home.” With a professional background in non-profit management, donor relations, and charitable gift planning, she believes in the special role of community foundations in building long-term financial resources for use in response to changing community needs. Wendy is particularly pleased to be part of the team as the Foundation expands its role and involvement in the community. |

Judy Norget
Judy, who has a background in publishing, chairs the Foundation’s communications committee and also serves as a member of the governance committee. She and her husband, author Charles Kahn, first came to the island in 1992, to see “if it worked for them.” Well, it did, and they have every intent of continuing their lives in this very special place. Judy has been very involved in many aspects of the community, most recently as president of ArtSpring. She loves her association with the Foundation and working with the dynamic team of people who are leading the Foundation into the future. |

One of his claims to fame at university was being a member of the Canada 8 Oared Rowing team, which won a number of world class championships. In 1971, Tom returned to the island with his wife, Yvonne, and children to take over the family business, Mouat's Trading Company, which he ran for 30 years until his retirement. Tom has been a trustee with the Foundation for many years. He has a deep commitment to the island and to the goals of the Foundation. |
